Addis Ababa Restaurant Review: Lime Tree Café

My days in Addis were very long, with meetings that started early and extended late into the night (and sometimes early morning).  I had far too much room service those nights when I just had no energy for anything else (although that was mostly good!), and a couple of times I ended up at an eatery close by my hotel called the Lime Tree Café.

The Lime Tree Café gets pretty high ratings on Trip Advisor, but I think those reviews are mostly for its Bole location.  I went to the decidedly less exciting Kasanchis location on Guinea Conakry Street, just meters from the UN Economic Commission for Africa complex.

The good thing about Lime Tree Café is that it has a pretty good selection of vegan items on its menu.  The first time I went I ordered the veggie curry with rice and a papaya juice.  The papaya juice was great! But the veggie curry was tasteless.

The second time, I ordered a banana and papaya juice (also yum!) and a tofu and eggplant sandwich and fries. The food was okay, but not great. The sandwich had a distinct lack of flavor and the fries were undercooked. But there was tofu, so really, who am I to complain?

The third time I went was in the middle of a particularly hard day, and my last in Addis.  I had to escape the meetings, which had turned toxic, and clear my head.  I headed to Lime Tree to sample their “fasting” vegan cakes.  They only had one available that day: a carrot cake. But, it was divine and exactly what I needed to give me the energy to get back and finish up my work.

So, if you are in Addis go to Lime Tree for the fresh fruit juices and the vegan cakes and cookies, but skip it for lunch or dinner.

Yes, I did break my gluten-free diet in Addis, and yes, I regretted it both times, even though my stomach was already pretty unhappy from the sad lunch buffets I was enduring most days.  I really had no excuse, other than wanting something different to eat. I guess sometimes, that’s enough.
