New York, NY Restaurant Review: Bombay Sandwich Company

I have been meaning to write this review for quite some time, because believe me, Bombay Sandwich Co.’s food is worth writing home about! I’ve tried just about everything vegan and gluten free on the menu now and when I’m craving good, wholesome, comfort food, it is at the top of my list.

For us vegans who can’t eat gluten, it’s heavenly.  While the sandwiches and wraps (which all sound delicious ) are off limits, they have a bounty of bowls and salads to choose from. And even better, if you are like me and can never quite decide on one thing, you can mix five of the salad and bowl offerings to make a platter and taste a bit of a lot of different things.

The chana masala is my all-time favorite. It’s everything it should be: wholesome chickpeas, just enough but not too much tomato, with lovely aromatic black cumin, garlic and ginger.  And when paired with Bombay Sandwich Co.’s formidable hot sauce, it is delicious and just deeply satisfying.

Chana Masala Bowl! My favorite!

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the veggie mashup, but oh my! What a treat!  It is made of slow-cooked seasonal veggies and is both sweet and spicy.  The hot sauce, again, just takes it to another level. I’m not sure that I’d want a whole bowl of it by itself, but it is an essential part of any platter.

Clockwise from left: veggie mashup, garden salad, sweet potato salad, kale & hearty salad, & chana masala.

It mightn’t look too pretty, but it is delicious! Clockwise from left: veggie mashup, garden salad, sweet potato salad, kale & hearty salad, & chana masala.

The French lentils are also delicious, cooked with cumin, asafetida, chilies and ginger.  But, if you were to ask whether you should get the chana masala or the lentils, I’d say chana masala hands down every time.  Although the spices in the lentils are lovely, the chana masala just packs that much more flavor.

Now, on to the salads… I love that the salads are not laden with heavy dressings. Lemon juice, some salt and pepper, herbs, spices, yum, yum!  They really let the veggies shine at Bombay Sandwich Co., just as they should.

If, and only if, you get a platter, you can get the sweet potato salad, which is worth doing.  It is a sensational mash of sweet potatoes, spring onions, ginger and what I thought was caraway seeds, but turns out to be carom seeds.  It’s pure, sweet, comforting goodness.

The garden salad is great! It’s a good, simple salad with spicy arugula, avo, tomatoes, pickled onions and cucumbers, seasoned with lots of pepper (yum!).

The kale salad is also spectacular, with sweet red cabbage, beets and carrots, creamy avo, sunflower seeds and a nice gingery kick! It is definitely hearty, and totally satisfying.

The quinoa salad is amazing.  If you get it on its own, it’s more than a meal. I loved the cardamom, which, with its strong, citrusy flavor, paired beautifully with the simple lemon juice dressing.  The crunch of the almonds, the creaminess of the chick peas, and the sweet chewiness of the dates gives it great texture (and flavor) and makes it such delight to eat.

Finally, the shepherd salad is just simple, wholesome and good.  This salad and slight variations of it are found all over the south and central Asia, the Caucusus and the Mediterranean for a very good reason:  the combination of cucumber, tomato, onion and soft herbs is just divine.

Not only is the food delicious, but it’s awesome value too. A bowl or a platter could easily be a hearty and satisfying meal for two.

So go, dear friends, to Bombay Sandwich Co.  It is definitely worth it.
