Pumpkin Waffle 2

So you may know from prior posts that I find cooking waffles incredibly intimidating.  Really.  I love them, but so often when I make them I am met with major heartbreak and disappointment.  And it seems so random.  One time I make them and they will be beautiful. The next, using the same recipe, they will stick and stick horribly. I can’t tell you how many of my waffle-making forays have ended in tears (and I rarely ever cry!). So I will often go months in between making waffles because of the sheer dread of them not working.

Millet and Kabocha Porridge

I’m beginning my third week of a long, long trip and this week it’s Bangkok. It’s nice, steamy and hot, hot, hot here. And while I’m here for work, with pleasure on the sidelines, I’m making sure that vegan food-seeking is a big part of those extra-curricula activities.  I’ve already visited a few of my old favorites, like Erawan Tea Room and Rasayana Retreat, where I met up with Caryl and Paul, the vegan power couple behind veganfoodquest.com. And I’ve visited a couple more new to me places that I’ll be blogging about soon.

Chile: Panqueques con Manjar

Today we travel to the west coast of South America and visit Chile on our VeganMoFo world tour.

Okay, so I have been to Santiago twice, and neither of them recently. The first time was a just over ten years ago and I remember it distinctly because I was there when Chile adopted a law allowing divorce. Yes, you read that right. Until 2003, divorce was illegal in Chile. I was attending a regional meeting on sexual and reproductive health and rights and remember the absolute elation of Chilean feminists when they learned the news that they finally had attained that most basic of rights.

Lithuania: Sweet and White Potato Pancakes with Mushroom Sauce

From Poland we move north today to Lithuania as our VeganMoFo world tour continues.

Lithuania is one of those places where you really get to experience the difference between dark and light.  I first travelled to the country one June many years ago and the light at night to me was striking.  I remember walking back to my hotel with friends some time after midnight and while the sun had dipped down, it was still twilight.

Poland: Sweet Rolls

Today on our VeganMofo world tour we visit Poland!

I travelled to Warsaw for the first time in November last year and absolutely fell in love with the city.  It’s dynamic and has an exciting energy (perhaps that’s because I spent time with some really awesome young feminists). But I would never want to live in Poland: the country is deeply Catholic and the church has way too much sway on politics.
