New Paltz, NY Restaurant Review: Karma Road

Whenever my partner or I are in or around New Paltz we almost always stop in for lunch or dinner at Karma Road, New Paltz’s only all-vegan deli, juice and smoothie bar.  The staff is great, friendly and always helpful and the environment is laid back, comfortable and inviting. They serve sandwiches, salads, fresh juices, smoothies, and baked goods, and also have a deli case full of tasty items that change seasonally and often include baked tofu, burgers, greens, grains, stews, pasta, and pizza.

We usually order one of their sandwiches on gluten-free wraps, and sometimes we indulge in a smoothie, or another treat. On our last two trips we tried the tempeh reuben, baked tofu wrap and the tofu love wrap.

The tempeh reuben is by far my favorite, with nice thick slices of tempeh, fresh sauerkraut, sprouts, vegan mayo and Karma Road’s own Russian dressing. It’s everything a reuben should be.  In fact, for a while Karma Road’s reubens ruined all others for me because they just didn’t stack up! It is a definite must!

The baked tofu wrap is similarly great and a very close second. It has nice big slices of baked tofu with a delightfully tasty walnut pesto, roasted red peppers, crisp romaine, and vegan mayo.  It might be a cliché but it definitely made my tastebuds sing (or at least very, very happy).

Unfortunately, we just didn’t love the tempeh love wrap. With a tofu-based veggie patty, along with romaine, tomatoes, mayo & tahini, it was lacking the exciting mix of flavors of the other sandwiches. The tahini sauce dominated and it was disappointingly bland.  Not sure how the patty would stack up on its own, but it seemed thin and just didn’t do too much for me.

I love that the wraps are served with a side salad, which just makes the meal just that more complete.

While we haven’t had it recently, the chocolate in my peanut butter smoothie is also heaven sent!  And the gluten-free crispy brown rice bars are also oh-so-good.

If you’re in or near New Paltz stop in!
