Bangkok Restaurant Review: Erawan Tea Room

On the Sunday evening I was in Bangkok, I had a dinner meeting with some colleagues to strategize for the week ahead.  I suggested we go to Erawan Tea Room, a small Thai restaurant attached to the Erawan Grand Hyatt hotel.  I had been there a couple of years earlier and recalled really great food in a quiet and pleasant environment that was just perfect for a meeting.  Plus I knew they could cater to me, as well as to my omnivore colleagues.

When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised to discover they had added a whole vegetarian section to their menu (which was definitely not there on my last visit).  My colleagues decided to join me in ordering vegan food and so we ordered a few dishes to share: the spicy pomelo salad, mushroom and vegetable stir-fry and a red vegetable curry, along with some rice.

I love spicy pomelo salad and this one did not disappoint.  The tart pomelo, combined with red chilies and peanuts, in a sweet and sour dressing was just perfection.  I could have eaten all of it, happily!

The red curry was similarly good. The soup had just the right amount of spice to balance the sweetness of the coconut milk and was nice and thick. And the stir-fry was great, with plenty of lightly sautéed mushrooms, crisp vegetables and tofu in a rich mushroom sauce, with lots of garlic, basil and chilies. Delicious!

To drink I enjoyed a rose apple smoothie and coconut water straight out of a Thai young coconut. Both were excellent.

Erawan Tea Room is on the higher end of Bangkok’s restaurant offerings. Its central location makes it a great place for a business meeting or just a nice lunch or dinner out with friends.  And I’m particularly thrilled that it has become even more vegan-friendly. It’s worth a visit!
