Review: Black Bean and Sweet Corn Pupusas by Tres Pupusas

These days, we vegans are pretty spoiled. It seems like every week there is a new vegan product hitting the market. And of course, we have to try them all! So I was really excited to get the chance to review the vegan and gluten-free black bean and sweet corn pupusas created by Tres Pupusas

So what’s a pupusa? Basically, they are stuffed corn tortillas that originate from El Salvador. My partner, who is half Colombian compared them to arepa with a filling. They are naturally gluten-free. And the great thing about the black bean and sweet corn pupusas by Tres Pupusas is that they have just six whole food ingredients: organic corn masa, water, black beans, corn, olive oil and salt.

I cooked them up in my lightly oiled cast-iron my stove top, as directed, and served them with a big side salad and a little hot sauce. They were delicious! The corn tortillas were nice and crispy and the filling was lightly seasoned and really tasty! While they were yum on their own, a little hot sauce really made them come alive.

A very easy and satisfying meal!

Each pupusa is just 130 calories and I found that two pupusas and salad created a very easy and satisfying meal. I bet they would be awesome with some guacamole and salsa as well. I can definitely see myself turning to these as a good option for dinner on those week nights that I want a wholesome, satisfying dinner on the table  in ten minutes or less!

You can find them at Whole Foods throughout the US.  Tres Pupusas recently launched a second vegan option with pinto beans and kale that sounds absolutely delicious. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for them. And you should too!

  1. I’m a “new” pups eater – there is a vendor at the Boulder Farmers Market that makes them (vegan) – OBSESSED – I should try to get there this weekend….
