New York, NY Restaurant Review: Candle Cafe

Last month when I was stuck at the UN at all hours, there was one morning I had a bit of free time before I knew I would be working late into the night.  So I decided to go for a long walk and stop in for lunch at Candle Cafe.  It has been a long time since I have visited, mostly because I don’t ever really have a reason to be on the Upper East Side. But I enjoyed my food so much I’ve decided that visiting Candle Cafe is as good a reason as any to spend more time in that neighborhood.

Candle Cafe has a pretty extensive gluten-free menu, which is great, but it meant I had a hard time deciding what to get. I ended up deciding to warm up with a bowl of hot tomato & basil soup, followed by the tofu club sandwich. The combination was truly epic.

Tomato Basil Soup

Tomato Basil Soup

The tomato & basil soup was good, just a little bit creamy, and nice and piping hot. However, the basil dominated the flavor profile of this soup and I was left wanting a richer tomato taste.  It normally comes with a pita, but for gluten-free customers they offer corn chips, which actually worked really well with the soup.  I had no problems finishing every last drop.

Tofu Club Sandwich

The tofu club is 100% gluten-free as it is on the menu. It is loaded with a thick slab of chipotle-marinated tofu, delicious smoky, seared tempeh bacon, tomato and lettuce on multi-grain gluten-free bread and it comes with vegan mayo on the side.  Wow.  Just wow.  From the start to the very last bit, I savored every bite.  The tempeh bacon was phenomenal and the smoky chipotle tofu paired with it perfectly. Adding the vegan mayo is a must. It turned the sandwich from great to really, really great. And the side salad of mesclun greens, cherry tomatoes and dill pickles with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing was also really yummy.

It’s a little on the pricey side ($15 for a sandwich, $7 for the soup). But it’s totally worth splurging on every once in a while.  Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and would very highly recommend it!
