Beacon, NY Restaurant Review: Tito Santana Taqueria

Tito Santana Taqueria is a very funky little Mexican restaurant on Main Street in Beacon, NY. With floor-to-ceiling murals and some great décor, it has a very cool vibe.

It is also one of Beacon’s most vegan-friendly places. My partner and I decided to check it out for lunch on frosty Saturday.

The menu has a number of clearly marked vegan items, including two types of tacos and a burrito. There were also a number of vegan specials the day we went, including chilli. We opted to each try the two vegan tacos and share a side of black beans and rice and grilled corn on the cob.

Awesome black beans and rice!

Awesome black beans and rice!

First, let me start with the black beans and rice. My partner grabbed it as soon as it was served and started devouring it. I almost had to wrestle it from him to get a photo and try some for myself.  These were some of the best-seasoned black beans I have ever tasted.  Yum!

The corn on the cob was also really amazing. Usually topped with a salty chili rub, lime juice and queso fresco, we got ours without the cheese.  Every bite was pure delight, with the hot spices balanced perfectly with the sourness of the lime juice and the sweetness of the corn.  Perfection.

Portobello Mushroom and Tofu Tacos

We each got a mushroom taco and a tofu taco and also ordered a side of guacamole to top them with. They came served with cabbage, red onion, radish, cilantro and salsa. The tacos were definitely not the stars of this menu.  I found them a bit bland, especially when compared to the beans and rice and corn. The tofu taco was the best of the two, with soft tofu fried to perfection: a good crispy crust encasing a soft gooey center!  The portabello in the portabello mushroom taco was fine, but could have used some livening up. With the addition of some lime juice, guac and hot sauce, the tacos were pretty tasty, but still a bit lacking.

Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Tito Santana Taqueria.  The black beans and corn on the cob were worth the trip alone!
