Chiang Mai Restaurant Review: Anchan Vegetarian Restaurant

Posted by on Dec 9, 2013 in Travel | 0 comments

My friends Vicci and Faye described Anchan Vegetarian Restaurant as the best restaurant in Chiang Mai, so when we all decided to go there for dinner one Friday night I was very excited.  The restaurant is located in a small soi off Nimmenhaemin Road, a very cool part of Chiang Mai with great shopping, plenty of restaurants, and lots of energy.

Anchan is located on the second floor, with an open balcony in the front of the restaurant, which almost makes it feel like you’re eating outdoors.  The menu changes, depending on what fresh and organic produce is available at the markets and so it is written on chalkboards on the wall of the restaurant, rather than in printed, set menus.

My mum and I ordered a beautiful long bean and tempeh red curry and a banana flower salad, along with some red rice.  I ordered a dragonfruit smoothie to drink, and she ordered some ginger & lime juice.

I love Thai red rice!

I love Thai red rice!

The red curry was amazing. The tempeh tasted exceptionally fresh (there’s nothing quite like fresh, homemade tempeh) and was delicious.  The rest of the veggies were cooked to perfection, and the creamy red curry sauce was a delicious mix of spicy and sweet flavors.  And I loved the green peppercorns that dotted the dish.

The banana flower salad was different from ones I have tried in the past.  In this one, the banana flowers were bettered in corn and rice flour and fried. The banana flowers were topped with fresh vegetables and dressed with a beautiful lime dressing that made the salad come alive.  Delicious!

Faye ordered the clear vegetable soup, which I also tried.  The soup had a mild-tasting vegetable broth and it lacked the complexity of flavors that is common in Thai cuisine, but it was really lovely in its simplicity.

My mum’s ginger and lime juice was phenomenally good; very heavy on the ginger. I’m going to try my hand at recreating it!  The dragonfruit smoothie was also yummy, of course!

The wait staff are excellent, speak English pretty well and were able to point out what was vegan and what I should avoid. Overall, it was a really lovely experience. The food was amazing and the restaurant had a great, relaxed ambience. I would be delighted to go back, again and again!
